“A thief comes only to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come that they may have life and have it in abundance.”
John 10:10 (HCSB)
I felt completely violated. It was as if the fire had become a flesh and blood thief, stealing from me my childish ignorance of its power to devastate my world. The fire had come in the night, quenching out our screams for help in the frigid air.
“The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.
They will rebuild the ancient ruins
and restore the places long devastated…” Isaiah 61:1-4

I’ve never really understood the concept of a “controlled burn” that the fire dept. conducts periodically.
Why burn all the trees and grass and shrubs until everything is all just ashes and ugly?
In the last few years I’ve come to understand.
A “controlled burn” allows all the weeds to get burned up, and — in time — everything grows up green again. More beautiful than before, because all the ucky weeds are gone.
You’ve just gone through a painful controlled burn. (I’m not saying any of you were “weedy” — but God sees what He wants to purify in each of us.) Fortunately, your fire dept. is God Himself. What will come out of this hard, ashy time will be more beautiful than any of us can imagine.
Time, Shawn. As hard as it is, time will heal.
Thanks for continuing to post.
Much love,
