“…The LORD their God is with them; the shout of the King is among them.” Numbers 23:21
There are days that my soul does not know that the Lord my God is with me. The shout of my King can be drowned out by the other voices that clamor for my attention. I never have to ask to hear the voice of anxiousness, discouragement, or shame. As much as I seek to drown their shouts out, they speak with unbidden force.
It is the voice of my King that can be so easily missed if my ear is not trained to listen. And yet, His shout is always there. All creation speaks of His majesty and wonder. He speaks every morning as He once again commands the sun to rise out of the darkness and bring me light. Every new season resounds with His faithfulness. His shout can be heard in the ocean’s roar and in the sound of my baby’s laughter. And His shout can be heard in the sobbing of a broken heart. But I can mistake these for other noises and miss Him altogether.
My King is not a drill sergeant, barking out orders to me. Instead, He is slow to anger, abounding in love, and His mercy makes allowances for my deafness to His voice. He is the parent who drops everything and says, “Come, baby girl, climb in my lap and tell me all about it.” He is a true gentleman, never forcing me to listen when I foolishly think any other voice beside His own is worthy of my attention. He runs to me with His own robe to cover the naked poverty of my soul caused by my own rebellion against Him and calls me His beloved one when I feel anything but that.
Jesus, may your shout ring clear and true today. May it overwhelm the din and mayhem of life’s distractions. May I know that it is Your voice and not my own. And as much as I may not want to obey, let me choose to hear the shout of my King and follow You alone.
